WHAT IS Domestic abuse ?

Domestic abuse is the physical, emotional, sexual or financial abuse of one person, usually a women, by another person with whom they are having, or have had an intimate or close relationship.

There are a lot of myths and stereotypes around Domestic abuse. It is often assumed to be a working class problem, however women of all social classes, races and nationalities, women of any age or religious belief, able bodied women and women with disabilities, lesbians and women with or without children are subjected to violence and abuse in their homes. Family income, level of education and occupation make no difference.

An abused woman might be any woman with whom you come into contact and it is not just husbands that can be abusive. Abusers can be partners (male or female), boyfriends, ex-partners, brothers, sons, fathers, in-laws, carers or dependants.

Physical violence is only one aspect of domestic abuse. An abuser’s behaviour can vary from the very brutal to the humiliating and degrading. Women may be left feeling isolated and exhausted. Domestic abuse is often used to maintain power and control over another person.
